Course overview

This course offers you a theoretical and practical understanding of the core activities involved in managing and leading in today's social work and social care arena.

Core modules

60-credit Masters Dissertation/Major Project or a 30-credit Masters Dissertation/Major project together with a 30 credit designated module from the following:

  • Leadership in professional Practice
  • Collaborative Practice for Integrated Care
  • Reflective Writing for Professional learning
  • Action Research and Social Inquiry
  • Research Studies

Assessment

A combination of assignments (essays), patchwork text, evaluative report, presentation, portfolio and dissertation.

Entry requirements

Candidates should hold an Honours degree (or equivalent according to University guidelines) within a social care/social work or related discipline and be working in a senior practitioner or management level position within their organisation. Candidates must be supported by their employer in order to undertake this award as much of the learning and evidence of practice is derived from the workplace. Candidates must be able to provide evidence of leadership in their chosen field, including the ability to work independently; demonstrate highly developed skills in strategic networking, negotiation and collaboration with service users and across professional boundaries; demonstrate the ability to take a leading role in managing risk, uncertainty and change whilst maintaining a balanced judgement when dealing with complex challenges. Ideally, candidates should be qualified within their professional area for at least two years and have successfully completed Consolidation, Specialist levels within their practice area and Higher Specialist post qualified levels within Leadership and Management or related practice area.

Additional information

Career opportunities: Successful completion of the course will allow consolidation in the student's current position and offer them the opportunity to progress to higher level posts. It may provide access to academic/research posts. It will also provide CPD evidence for GSCC Re-registration.
