Biotechnology principles such as domestication of animals for food by ancient civilization, bread and pickle making in food processing industry, wine and beer making in alcoholic beverage industry, selective breeding of crops and crop-rotation in agriculture, and vaccine development and vaccination in health care industry, etc. were adopted by the society and were shown to produce great impact on the living conditions of people in the earlier millennium. Biotechnology had overwhelming growth in the 20th century. Fermentation principles of Biotechnology revolutionized the production of penicillin and other antibiotics, and the food processing in the early half of the 20th century. In the last two decade, genetic engineering principles and tissue culturing methods of Modern Biotechnology have evolved and have been revolutionizing all the avenues of science and technology. It is expected that this Modern Biotechnology will produce tremendous enhancement in the quality of living with a safer and more resourceful world in this millennium.

With this foresight, under the dynamic guidance of our Chairman Dr. A. C. Muthiah, our College has taken a strategic initiative by starting the Biotechnology Programme in the year of 2005 to provide skilled human resource in this new Modern Biotechnology and to enhance the research in this area.

Our department runs an Anna University- Chennai affiliated undergraduate programme that is approved by AICTE -NewDelhi. The Department of Biotechnology has full-fledged laboratories that include Biochemistry & Bio-organic Chemistry, Bio-informatics, Bio-Process, Cell Biology, Genetic Engineering, Immunology, Instrumental Methods of Analysis, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Downstream Processing. Our Biotechnology building has three floors with 73,000-sq.ft area for all those Laboratories, Classrooms, Library, Conference Room, and Offices for members of faculty.
