Air Pollution and Abatement
Atmosphere and Meteorology: Composition of atmosphere and its dynamics; Meteorological parameters; Energy balance and thermal phenomena of the atmosphere (specially of troposphere and stratosphere); winds and currents; wind data analysis and wind roses construction and use; and Atmospheric stability and stability parameters estimation.
Sources and sinks, and consequences of Air Pollution: Air pollution sources; Local, regional and global air pollution problems; Fugitive emissions and indoor air pollution problems; and Effects of air pollution on humans, flora and fauna, and materials.
Dispersion: Stacks, plume behavior and principles of air pollutants dispersion; Air pollution modeling basics; Gaussian dispersion model; Air pollution modeling software and their use.
Air pollution prevention, control and abatement: Emission standards and ambient air quality standards. Strategies for source reduction. Transportation related air pollution problems and strategies for the prevention and control of automobile exhaust emissions. Air pollution control devices (APCDs) and their design principles. Design of APCDs: cyclones; wet scrubbers; and fabric bag filter houses. Strategies for air pollution abatement. Green belt design.
Sampling and analysis: Stack monitoring, ambient air quality monitoring and monitoring of tail pipe emissions. High volume samplers and stack monitoring kits.
