Course programme

B.E. Instrumentation and Control Engineering

The Department of Instrumentation and Control Systems Engineering was established in the year 2007. The Department provides undergraduate program (B.E.) in Instrumentation and Control and Master Degree program (M.E.) in Control Systems Engineering. The M.E programme was started in the year 1971.

Instrumentation and Control Engineering play a vital role in any modern industry. The Department caters to the ever challenging needs of technical excellence in all areas of Instrumentation & Control Engineering such as Electronics, Electrical, and Mechanical measurements, Process Control Engineering. The curriculum begins with foundation courses in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Electronics and Mechanics. Emphasis is laid on the courses like sensors and transducers, Micro-Controllers, Industrial Instrumentation, control systems, PC interfacing and telemetry. The focus in the final year is more on advanced electives such as Instrumentation System Design, Robotics, Biomedical Engineering, Intelligent Controllers, Embedded Systems, and Instrumentation and Control Systems for industries. With a prefect blend of industrial exposure, coupled with good technical base, our students will make their presence felt in various technological domains in all the top-level industries. The infrastructure and lab facilities are upgraded from time to time and provide adequate opportunities for students and researchers to learn and innovate.

The department is well-equipped with Virtual Instrumentation Center and advanced laboratories like Process Control,Industrial Automation etc. PSG-NI Virtual Instrumentation Centre is a collaborative centre started in the year 2000 by PSG College of Technology and National Instruments, USA which the first centre in India in the field of Virtual Instrumentation. Intensive training programmes and short term courses on LabVIEW Basics, are continuously organized by the centre for the students and faculty of PSG College of Technology and other engineering colleges. The centre conducts continuing education programmes to the executives of leading organizations like Ashok Leyland, Hosur, South India Textile Research Association, Coimbatore, Indra Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, Sundaram Clayton Ltd., Chennai, ELGI Equipments Ltd., Chennai, Bloom Energy India Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore.

All the laboratories in the department are approved for carrying out research leading to Ph.D. degree by Anna University, Coimbatore. So far one faculty have completed Ph.D degree and currently, there are 7 Ph.D. scholars pursuing their research work in the department. The department offeres consultancy on designing LabVIEW based systems for organisations like Ashok Leyland and Bharath Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Trichy.
