Plastic engineering is today a vibrant sector promising much growth potential. The versatility and durability of plastic has made it the most important product of today. It can substitute almost any material used by man including wood, rubber tin, aluminum,still, iron ,brass, bricks, clay, paper ,etc, and it is used in almost every modern industry. The growth of consumerism in the recent times has led to the fourfold growth in the used of plastics.

The profession:

The design ,development, research, training and technical support in the plastic industry is provided by the plastic engineers .The production process is manned by the chemical engineer and polymer technologist .Plastic mould technologist and designer work in the creative sector. Those who have specialise in plastic testing & conversion technology are responsible for reducing pollution ,cause by the plastic usage, recycling & disposal. Management graduates who have the specialized knowledge of plastic are usually recruited as manager in companies selling plastic products.
Job market:

Jobs are available both in the public and private sector, In the public sector plastic technologist can find suitable position in the ministry of petroleum and natural gas , The oil and natural gas commission, Indian institute of petroleum, petrochemical engineering plants. Polymers corporations of different states etc in the private sector companies dealing in the manufacture and marketing of the plastic products offer employments to plastic technologist and designers.

Future prospects:

Petrochemical is high priority sector and the industry has enormous growth prospects. Those with the requisite expertise in this field can reap rich dividends in the future.

Various private companies dealing with the production and marketing of plastic commodities offer employment to plastics technologists and engineers. In the public sector, plastics engineers / technologists and technicians may find employment with the petroleum, oil and natural gas commissions, laboratories, petrochemicals engineering plants, the polymer industry, research associations, petrofiles cooperative limited and other such organisations. They also play a significant role in the key sectors of the economy, including agriculture and water management, automobiles and transportation, building and construction, telecommunication and electronics, besides defence and aerospace, computers and power transmissions.
