Course programme

India has a rich history of textile design and a strong manufacturing base. The country's traditional handloom sector co-exists with the highly mechanised mill sector and the decentralized powerloom sector. The industry is also receiving global recognition with many international designers now sourcing fabric from India. Designers in the textile industry have a wide range of roles and responsibilities and are frequently required to make design decisions throughout the manufacturing process. Therefore there is a growing need for designers with technical and aesthetic proficiency.

LEVEL 1: Knowledge, Skills and Concepts

Level 1 aims to develop sensitivity in design and acquire basic knowledge and skills for textile designing. This level will have modules in application of color concepts & principles for printing, weaving, knitting and embroidery. The module will preliminarily emphasize on conceptualization of design ideas, processes and final execution. The students at this level are given an opportunity to learn an international language from the given options of French, Spanish, Chinese or German.

LEVEL 2: Application and Practice

The program continues with professional approach for design development with a special focus on practical experience through industry-related projects. This level will have design subjects with a blend of technology. Level 2 concentrates on design development of ideas through an understanding of the commercial and technical aspects of the textile industry. This will equip the students to develop design competency skills as per the industry environment requirement. The learning of international language continues. This Level provides an opportunity to students for a semester study elsewhere in India or abroad at an approved textile institute or to do a research based project in the area of textiles. Students undertake a compulsory industrial training to familiarise themselves with the actual atmosphere, pace and discipline of professional practice and the working culture of the textile industry. Students who do not opt for study overseas or in any other reputed national institute may continue to pursue their area of interest at the academy itself.

LEVEL 3: Consolidation

Level 3 focuses on self-study under tutorial guidance for an independent working culture. It aims to consolidate and implement the creative, technical and industrial experience. This level aims to produce an innovative, well-informed and motivated professional with the ability to analyze, synthesize and conclude various complex issues related to design, planning and technical management. The first part of the level provides students with a choice of either tying up with the industry for training or to select a brief for a project from the industry. In the later part, during the Final Design Project, students will be encouraged to develop individual approaches to design development and will produce work which is both original in concepts and diverse in outcomes.

Thread Works

At the end of Level 3, students have the opportunity to exhibit their final collections in the public arena. Herein, celebrated textile designers observe their creations and the industry looks out for prospective creative talent for absorption in their design departments or to engage them in freelance capacity. All exhibitors benefit from the design insight shared by the accomplished visitors, a value that students are able to carry into their budding professional careers.
