B.Sc. Biotechnology with CBZ
This Discipline with emphasis on multi-disciplinary approach, pursues courses in Biochemistry, Biotechnology & Microbiology. Highly qualified faculty drawn from reputed universities & premier research institutes, the performance & placement of the students has assigned a distinct status to this division. Department of Life Sciences is spread over an area of 30,000 sq. ft.
Besides teaching, the department of life sciences is also engaged in quality research work and has marked considerable progress. Different teachers are engaged in investigations in the field of Bioprospecting, Biodegradation, Molecular Biology, Antibiotics, Proteomics, Immunology and Protein Biochemistry.
Biotechnology is now playing an increasingly important role in our lives. It has emerged from developments in fundamental Bio Sciences in 1970's to become one of the important new generators of industrial wealth and social benefits. The last twenty years has seen an explosion in the application of genetics, cells and their components to reap the products of this technology, which enable to improve the quality of life, from new therapeutic treatment, rapid diagnostic tests to improved disease resistance in crops. Biotechnology has given industry a new ways to make valuable chemicals and to treat its waste. The technology has influenced what we eat, how we wash our clothes and even how we solves our crimes.
Biotechnology is highly multidisciplinary. It has its foundations in many fields including biology, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, chemistry and chemical and process engineering.
It has been considered as a series of enabling technologies involving the practical application of organisms or their cellular components to manufacturing and service industries and environmental management. Historically, biotechnology was an art rather than a science, exemplified in the manufacture of wines, beers, cheeses, etc., where the techniques of manufacturer were well worked out and reproducible but the molecular mechanisms were not understood. With the major advances in our understanding of microbiology and biochemistry, these processes have become better understood and improved.
Modern biotechnological processes now encompass a wide range of new products including antibiotics, vaccines and monoclonal antibodies, the production of which has been optimized by improved fermentation procedures.Biotechnology has been further diversified by a host of new molecular innovations, allowing unprecedented changes to be made to living systems. Transgenic plants and animals are heralding a new age in agriculture, and gene therapy in humans may eradicate many previously incapacitating diseases. In the environment, biotechnology is allowing major improvements in water and land management and also re-mediating the pollution generated by over industrialisation.
The curriculum involves the in-depth study of subjects of Biology i.e. Zoology, Botany and Chemistry. The course is further enriched by the basic study of subjects like Biochemistry, Biophysics, Cell Biology, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Molecular biology, Genetic Engineering, Plants & Animal Biotechnology, Environmental & Industrial Biotechnology, Bio-diversity & Bioprospecting and various other advanced techniques. Further the student has to undergo a project/dissertation work for 8-10 weeks under the guidance of faculty members which helps to develop an aptitude for research.
The advantage of studying this degree course is that the candidate can further pursue higher studies (Masters level) in specialized field of Sciences i.e. Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Plant Molecular Biology, Medical Biotechnology etc. The candidates have an option for furtherance of their studies in any discipline for their Masters Degree in fundamental sciences. This program has been inculcated in the stream of education with a view of opening simultaneous avenues for students doing Graduation in Sciences to have an exposure of Biotechnology. The candidate passing this course can be appointed as sales/marketing executives in companies manufacturing, microbiological media / diagnostic kits or biotechnological products. Their knowledge of fundamentals of Biotechnology will be an asset for their performance. The candidate can also go for Masters in Business Administration (MBA in Biotechnology). This will further strengthen their managing acumen in Biotechnology related industries. The candidate after passing this course can also opt for Law (IPR & Biotechnology) which is a highly specialized profession and after the advent of IPR Laws in present global scenario this will be a most sought out job. The degree with an integrated approach with Biotechnology bias will be an added advantage for the candidate. The candidate after passing this course can also opt for Masters in Clinical Research which will open a new realm of Medical Sciences for the development of drugs for human use.
