Note from the Department
Established in 1968, Mount Carmel's Department of Mathematics is presently headed by Mrs. Hemalatha K, M.Sc, M.Phil. The department offers a strong and demanding program of graduate studies in mathematics with a spanning a wide range of concepts. The department consists of seven permanent lecturers with research interests in virtually every area of mathematics. Students and faculty are encouraged to interact with each other through a variety of courses, seminars and also share a personal bond with each other.
The Departments believes, as G.F Simmons put it, "It is a basic principle in the study of mathematics that a proof is not really understood until the stage it has reached at which one can grasp it as a whole and see it as a single idea. A proof should be chewed, swallowed and digested and this process of assimilation should not be abandoned until it yields a full comprehension of the overall pattern of though."
