Sri Rama and Bhaktha Gentela Narayana Rao Govt. Degree College was established 50 years ago, in 1956, with the generous contribution of Rs. 1,00,000/- by a renowned philanthropist Sri Gentela Narayana Rao. The circumstances that led to the establishment of the college are awe-inspiring. With the end of Nizam's rule of the then Hyderabad State Khammam district was bifurcated from the Warangal district. It was a time where there were no degree colleges in the Telangana region except in Hyderabad. In such circumstances the then Chief Minister of A.P. Sri Boorgula Ramakrishna Rao decided to have one degree college opened in each district so that the middle and poor rural youth can have accession to higher education. In the wake of these circumstances late Sri GV.Butt, the then District Collector of Khammam formed a committee with the elite of the town such as Sri Bommakanti Satyanarayana, Sri S.N.Murthy, Sri V. Srinivasa Rao, Sri Kouturi Krishna Murthy and Sri Ravulapati Janaki Rama Rao for initiating the noble cause. Fund raising was the hurdle which they decided to overcome with the proposal to sell away the Green Jade Locket of Lord Sithamma of Bhadrachalam temple. On seeing in the resolution published in local newspapers Sri Gentela Narayana Rao was greatly upset. He met the District Collector and requested not to sell the Locket of Seethamma and that he would donate the amount of Rs. one lakh for acquiring land for the proposed college. That is why the College is named after the Bhakta and his Lord, as Sri Rama & Bhakta Gentela Narayana Rao Degree College.
