On the Gandhi Jayanti Day in 1986, Indira Gandhi Government College, the third largest College of the State, came into existence in Tezu, a picturesque town, Head Quarters of Lohit District of Arunachal Pradesh. The College caters to the higher educational needs of six districts of the eastern part of the State.
Initially started in a corner of the building of the District Industries Centre (DIC) with 42 students and eight faculty members in five departments, the College was later shifted to an abandoned building of Navodaya Vidyalaya and finally to the present permanent site of 210 acres in 1995. Over the years the College experienced significant expansion both in terms of quality and quantity. The Commerce stream was introduced in 2004 and efforts are on for the introduction of Science stream. The strength of students during the Academic Session (2009-10) is 1,501 with 27 Faculty Members. The Department of Education is newly introduced during the Session 2007-08.
