Periodontology has made tremendous progress in the recent years. The analysis of periodontal tissues mechanisms and causes of their involvement in various pathologic process has gone beyond histology and physiology into cellular and molecular research. Today, reconstruction of lost structures, replacement of teeth by implants and achievement of esthetic results are integral part of clinical periodontology.

The high incidence of periodontal problems and the close relationship between periodontal and restorative dental therapies make this specialty an inevitable one. In our department of Periodontics, we believe in timely intervention to arrest the progress of all periodontal diseases, in addition to patient education and motivation. We mainly stress upon the maintenance of general oral health, periodontal health and last but not the least oral hygiene.

Evaluation of systemic health, examination of periodontium, radiographic analysis followed by comprehensive treatment plan, patient education and motivation to maintain oral hygiene and regular follow up are inevitable steps of periodontal treatment, that we follow here.

The procedures that are performed in the Department of periodontics are as follows :

Scaling, root planing and curettage.

Splinting with wire / fibrebond.

Gingivectomy, gingivoplasty

Crown Lengthening

Mucogingival procedures such as frenectomy, root coverage procedures.

Resective and regenerative osseous surgery.

Our department is equipped with advanced ultrasonic scalers, light cure units including the usual surgical instruments required for periodontal therapy. Strict sterilization procedures are ensured for utmost care of the patient.

The curriculum includes regular clinical and theory lectures for Third and Fourth Year BDS students. Basic knowledge on periodonita, patient evaluation and management is imparted to the students of Third Year BDS. Instrumentation skills are also developed using study models. Fourth Year students are given guidance for in depth study of the subject along with treatment and management of patients with periodontal diseases including those with systemic involvement by our very experienced and respected senior faculty of the department.

The well trained group of periodontists in our college who specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of severe or unsual problems serve to supplement the general dental care available to all the patients who come to our dental college thereby contributing to the continuous progress of dentistry.
