The BTEC Foundation in Art and Design course is normally made up of 5 subjects whereby you specialize in one pathway. The other subjects normally reflect the path you have chosen to specialize in so that they can feed into the development of portfolio and the end of year final show. The BTEC Foundation in Art and Design is awarded to you after a year of study and provides preparation and entry into higher education. If you were to choose the foundation it is possible to start only in September so that you follow it through to the end of year show in June.

What are the course objectives?

The Art Foundation is the preferred course for those hoping to attend University. It will give you a strong basis in techniques and comprehension of fine art. You will leave with a developed sense of your own artistic style and an excellent portfolio which will get you into the University of your choice.

Is this course for me?

Art Foundation is traditionally taken in the year after school and before University. It is also an excellent course to take for those hoping for a career change and wishing to get into the creative industries and/or visual arts.

How do I enrol?

We will contact you to discuss your interest further. We usually ask to see some examples of your art and design work and will need a personal statement from you. You may be asked to interview (this can be over the internet). After this you will be given the opportunity to enrol and will need to pay a deposit. International students will also be asked to pay part of their fees up front and will be issued with a CAS.

Early bird discount: A very limited number of scholarships are available for students who apply early and show artistic promise.

Requirements: We have no specific entry requirements but will need to see some examples of your work and usually invite potential students to an informal interview. For non-EU students: If you need a CAS number you would have to pay £400 plus at least half of the full fees. Also we would need a photocopy of your passport any school/university certificates, art/design/photo certificates, IELTS or any English language certificate from approved providers (check the UKVI list online) and samples of your art/design/photo work.

The BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is the popular route to prepare for entry to university study. A diagnostic course that encourages you to explore and experiment with different pathways, media and materials in order to identify and specialise in your area of interest. You will develop a portfolio and work on a self-set major project. This is the highest qualification currently offered at the College.
