CERTIFICATE IN COMMUNICATION SKILLS

The purpose is to develop students' ability to use English accurately, appropriately and fluently both for face to face and telephonic communication in academic, social and work situations. The course is divided into three parts. The first part familiarises the students with the sounds of English and their symbols and introduces them to word stress, sentence stress and intonation. An attempt is also made to neutralise students' accent by drawing their attention to common errors in English due to the influence of the mother tongue. The second part focuses on the basics of oral communication and development of the ability to use English for performing some of the most common communicative functions in academic, social and work situations. The third part helps students to understand the telephone as a mode of communication and prepares them to handle telephone calls besides using it for basic communicative functions such as requesting and asking for and giving information. Listening and speaking activities are combined in order to develop fluent communication using drills, role play, simulations and informing group activities.
