The Guru Nanak Dev University's Faculty of Arts and Social Science offers Certificate Course in Library and Information Science course to its students. The course structure for it is as follows:

Paper 1 : Library Organization and Management.
Part-1
Libraries : Different types of libraries: Organisation, Purpose and Functions of libraries, Laws of Library Science.
Part-II
Management of Library Operations: Different sections of library and their functions : Acquisition, Technical, Periodical, Reference, Circulation and Maintenance.

Paper-II Organization of Library Materials
Part-I
Library Classification (Theory)
Library Classification: Concept, Definition, Need and Purpose, Introduction to major Schemes of Library Classification: Dewey Decimal Classification and Colon Classification.
Part-II
Library Cataloguing (Theory)
Library Catalogue: Definition, Need and Purpose. Physical forms of catalogue. Types of Catalogues. Kind of entries and their functions.

Paper III Organisation of Library Materials:
Part-I

Should include 16 titles out of which the candidates be asked to classify any 8 titles according to Dewey Decimal Classification, Latest Ed.
The Following books are to be provided to the candidates in the examination centre.
1. Copies of Dewey Decimal Classification, Latest Ed.
2. Sears List of Subject Headings, Latest ed.(18th Ed.)

Part-II

Should include four titles to be catalogued according to AACR,2nd Ed. supplemented by Sears List of Subject Headings, Ed. 18th .
The Examiner should set four titles out of which the candidates be asked to catalogue fully two titles in all. Only simple titles should be given Titles having complicated personal names & those having complexities in descriptive cataloguing should be excluded.

Classification Practice of simple titles by Dewey Decimal Classification(Latest ed.).

Part-II

Library Cataloguing(Practice)
Cataloguing of simple books by Anglo American Cataloguing Rules( 2nd ed.) supplemented by Sears List of Subject Headings (Latest Edition )
Note: Cataloguing of corporate authors, composite books, multivolume books and periodical publications are excluded.
