The purpose of the course is to develop an ophthalmic manpower at primary
eye care level. This training will enable a student to become a competent person in
providing service as an optometrist, Refractionist and Ophthalmic Assistant to the
community in urban, semi-urban & rural setting in private, semi - Governmental
and Governmental sectors. The trainee on the completion of the course would
besides functioning primarily as an (vision care professionals) Ophthalmic
Assistant, Optometrist and Refractionist would also perform various tasks at all
levels.
Blindness is a major public health problem in India accourding to WHO
there are 10 million blind and visually disabled nearly 80% of blindness is
avoidable if there is adequate eye care professionals at primary, secondary, tertary
level.
"Vision 2020" right to sight and National programme for control of
blindness commitment to eliminate avoidable blindness by the year 2020, there is
urgent need of 75000 vision care professionals to establish vision centers at
primary eye care level in India.
