Course programme

Course Details:

Teaching workload consists - 9 MD Pathology, 150 MBBS, 40 BDS, 10 DMLT (Path) students per year.

Facilities :

Department Seminar Library has got about 200 books, WHO Tumor classification manuals, celluloid transparencies and relevant hand books. Group teachings of students are carried out on CCTV Microscope. Photography facility is computerized with teaching Pentahead microscope. Deparment has student computer lab along with internet facility. The department museum has about 500 mounted specimens for teachings and learning of UG and PG students.

Activities planned and Implemented:

Blood banking facility of the Department of Pathology located in Hospital campus has been taken up among the list of 40 blood banks all over India for upgradation by NACO. Blood component unit is developed in the existing blood bank facility and equipments worth less than one crore have been already installed in working order. Teaching and technical staff has been given training through arrangements by NACO at Training camps arranged at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences. Drug Inspectors have already submitted their report of final inspection for issue of Licence for blood bank and component pathology and have given suggestions/objections- (1) modification of present structure in view of requisite chambers and arrangements in view of a present day blood and component banking facility for a medical college hospital and around (2) trained medical technical staff with minimum qualification of 10+2 (science) + DMLT. Principal and CMS, Dean faculty of Medicine and Higher authorities have been informed of the requirements. Cadre Review Section of the Office of Registrar AMU has been informed to notify at the earliest minimum qualifications with the scales for the posts of Lab Attendant, JLA, SLA, Lab Assistant, Technical Assistant and Senior Technical Assistant as prescribed by Governing agencies like UGC, MCI, NACO etc. and adopted by competent authority at AMU so that 4 posts of STA, 2 posts of TA, 1 post of SLA lying vacant without substitute and other 9 posts of technician provided temporary substitutes may be proposed for advertisement and selection committees (GSC/DPC) at the earliest. The blood component banking unit is desired by Joint Director of NACO to start functioning by the end of March 2009, but, before functioning, removal of objections and procurement of licence is essential. Revolving fund for blood and component bank as desired by authorities has been created and is functioning. Blood donation camps are planned and are being held by Incharges blood bank as per the proramme informed to MS, CMS and Principal JNMC AMU.

Histopathology lab requires microtome with disposable knives, cooling arrangements by installing 2 ACs and table work for section cutting facility having become outdated, is planned out of first installment of UGC grants- 4.5 lacs communicated for utilization and revolving fund of laboratory.

Revolving funds as approved by competent authority towards the needs of hematology and chemical pathology are in the process of implementation. Chemical pathology investigations are carried out by Semi-autoanalyzer.

Clinical pathology lab 73 is carrying out investigations by automation and generating revolving fund to the amount of average Rs.3000 per day, needs one backup auto-cell counter to avoid any crisis due to machine failure. One not working cell counter is being negotiated to the company to exchange working cell counter at lowered cost or charity towards institution.

Department was established in 1960s by renowned Prof. Sami Hamid. Under his head ship Prof. S. P. Tyagi, Prof K, N. Ahmed, Prof. Ansar A. Khan, Prof. Firoza Hamid contributed to the establishments of histopathology, hematology, cytopathology, chemical pathology, clinical pathology and blood banking pathology labs.

Presently there are 7 professors, 1 reader, 8 lecturers and 6 senior residents along with 27 junior residents in the department. Investigative workload consists 20 histopathological specimen, 25 cytopathological cases, 50 hematological investigations, 200 chemical pathological investigations, 500 clinical pathological investigations are carried out average per day and 40 blood units of blood arranged daily in the blood bank.
