UNIT-I
Genetic engineering: Introduction to Gene manipulation. Basic techniques: Isolation and
purification of DNA and RNA, Agarose Gel electrophoresis, Southern, Northern and
Western blotting, PCR.
UNIT-II
Application of Genetic Engineering for plant disease resistance: Herbicide resistance:
phosphoinothricin, glyphosate, sulfonyl urea, atrazine, insect resistance, Bt-genes, Non-
Bt like protease inhibitors, alpha amylase inhibitor, virus resistance: Disease resistance:
chitinase, 1-3 beta glucanase, antifungal proteins, nematodal resistance.UNIT-III
Application of Genetic Engineering for plant productivity and performance: Abiotic
stress: Drought, cold and salt, Flavr-Savr-long shelf life of fruits and flowers, use of ACC
synthase, polygalacturanase, ACC oxidase, modification of seed proteins, male sterile
lines, carbohydrate composition and storage, ADP glucose pyrophosphatase, Golden rice,
blue rose, plantibodies.
UNIT-IV
Metabolic Engineering and Industrial products: Genetic control mechanism and
manipulation of phenylproponoid and shikimate pathway, industrial enzymes,
biodegradable plastics, polyhydroxybutyrate, therapeutic proteins, antibodies, edible
vaccines, oleosin partitioning technology, nif and rod genes. Genetic engineering of
microorganisms: Introduction, application of recombinant microorganism in agriculture,
medicine and environmental protection.
UNIT -V
Biotech products from animal cell cultures: virus vaccines, Interferons, Recombinant
therapeutic proteins, production of monoclonal antibodies. Genetic engineering and
public health concerns.
