This paper provides information on role of microorganisms in Industrial fermentation
processes.
Objective
This paper aims to empower the students with various designs of fermenter. The

CONTENTS
UNIT I
Isolation, Preservation and Maintenance of Industrial Microorganisms .Kinetics of
microbial growth and death. Media for industrial fermentation. Air and Media
Sterilization.
UNIT II
Types of fermentation processes: Analysis of batch, Fed-batch and continuous
bioreactions; Air-lift, stirred tank, tower, fluidized bed, packed bed, pulsed,
photobioreactors
UNIT III
Industrial and agricultural microbiology - microbial synthesis of organic acids (Citric
acid), alcohol (ethanol), alcoholic beverages (wine) ; Biofertilizers and bioinsecticides;
microbial ore leaching and mineral recovery
UNIT IV
Medical microbiology - vaccine production from microbes; antibiotics production;
methods of isolation and idenification of pathogenic organisms; antibiotic susceptibility
testing
UNIT V
Introduction to Food Technology-Elementary idea of canning and packing; Food
Preservation -Sterilization and Pasteurization of food products
