Course Objective:
Increasing complexity and turbulence in business environment today necessitates decision makers to foresee the effects of interventions before they are implemented in real situations. Operationally this calls for a disciplined thinking process that involves visualization, abstraction, design of alternatives, to approach a decision making situation. Use of computer based models can help a decision maker immensely in all of these. The primary objective of this course is to enable the student to develop capability in generating insights via modelling in a wide range of realistic situations.
Course Content
In keeping with the objective the following aspects of business analysis will be covered:
a) Data visualization
b) Problem structuring
c) Solution generation
d) What-if Analysis and Scenario Generation
It is expected that on completion of this course students will be able to recognize the key problems in a situation, develop a structure for analyzing the problem, carry out a cogent analysis, and present the analysis and insights.
Pedagogy
The class will be conducted in a laboratory format where students will solve problems with the assistance of the instructor. Spreadsheet will be used quite extensively throughout the course. Effective participation in class would require students to be familiar with use of Excel.
