Course programme
The objective of this course is to familiarize second-year MBA students
with: (1) the basic analytical tools used by labour economists to study
labour market processes and outcomes, and (2) examine the relevance of
these tools/concepts to developing economies in general, and to the
Indian economy in particular. Theoretically, the purpose is to expose
students to both the neoclassical and institutional (both the 'old' and
the 'neo') approaches/traditions to the study of human resources and
labour markets.
Some of the topics covered: labour supply, demand for labour, wage structure, economics of discrimination, trade unions, labour contracts and incentives, unemployment, internal and segmented labour markets, executive and managerial compensation.
Requirements: there is a comprehensive endterm closed book examination (60% weightage) and an original term/research paper (40% weightage). The latter will generally consist of using actual data and statistical software.
