This course is so designed for non-biology students to have glimpses on the
biotechnology programme.
Objective
In simple, this paper will impart knowledge on how biology is exploited for the
betterment of mankind.
Goal
The students will be able to understand the application of biotechnology in our day to day
life.
UNIT I
Biology to Biotechnology, Ancient and Modern biotechnology; Basic Principles of
recombinant DNA Technology; New diagnostic tools; Protein engineering.
UNIT II
Exploiting of Microbes; Large scale cultivation; commercial exploitation; cell and
enzyme immobilization; Antibiotic production.
UNIT III
Plant Biotechnology; Plant tissue culture techniques; Biotechnology in Plant production -
secondary metabolites, Agriculture and Forestry.
UNIT IV
Animal Biotechnology; mammalian cell culture and their application. Monoclonal
antibodies; Transgenic animals. Clones, Medicinal Plants, Genetically manipulated food.
UNIT V
Biotechnology in human health; Basis of disease inherited disease; pathology of vascular,
brain disease; current therapy, Gene therapy, current trends in the manufactured foods.
