An Overview:
Established in the year 1979 with an intake of 50 seats per year, the department has taken up the challenge of developing competent Electrical Engineers capable of facing the emerging challenges. The department has produced several hundred Electrical Engineers some of whom are occupying very senior positions in their respective organizations both in India and abroad.

The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi approved the program vide No. F-2-15/B -III/RC - MB/26863 dated 31-03-'94. The department is ISO Certified and also accredited by NBA.

Focus area of study:

Electrical & Electronics Engineering: The department provides in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge to undergraduate students in the field of Electrical & Electronics Engineering.

New plans include starting of a Postgraduate program as well as a R & D centre to study various aspects of Power Systems and application of Information Science in respect of planning, operation and maintenance of Power Systems.

Why choose Electrical & Electronics Engineering:
Electrical Engg is an old but evergreen course in the engineering stream. An Electrical Engineering graduate has various options to choose for career growth viz. he can easily switch over to software field and can opt for design/fabrication of electronic hardware and thus can become an entrepreneur also. He can also work in the Instrumentation Technology or in Medical Electronics fields. However there is ample scope for growth as a core Electrical Engineer.

Teaching Methodology:

The faculty members are highly qualified with wide experience in teaching as well as in Industry. The teaching methodology is interactive with students' participation. The students are required to appear in the Internal Assessment Tests, held at regular intervals. Extra classes are taken to ensure all students get full understanding of lessons delivered on a daily basis.

Infrastructure:

The department provides in depth theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of Electrical & Electronics Engineering to students with special emphasis on new developments in the areas of electric power generation, transmission & distribution.

Laboratories:

The department possesses nine well-equipped laboratories with state of the art of technology. Besides the department possesses modern lecture halls, seminar rooms with modern projection equipment and a computer laboratory with a number of PCs connected with Internet facilities.

Library:

The Institute possesses a very well equipped Central Library with large number of books, magazines & journals. Besides the department also has its own departmental library that contains good number of books, Project Reports of previous years so that students & staff can access the required books/reports for reference purposes.

Human Resource:

The faculty members of the department are highly qualified and they are exposed to new developments in the field through Seminars, Workshops and Conferences. Experts from premier research institutions and industry inside the country & overseas interact with faculty and students as part of the teaching learning experience. Faculty members are recruited as per the prescribed qualifications and experience as laid down by AICTE. Many of the faculty members have 15 to 20 years of teaching/ industry/ R & D experience. Six faculty members have registered for Ph.D. and their thesis activities are in advanced stage of completion. The faculty consists of the following.

(i) FACTS Devices & HVDC Transmission System
(ii) Voltage Stability & Chaos in Power Systems
(iii) High Power Generation using superconductors

· Current research efforts:
6 faculty members are registered for Ph.D.and they are working in advanced areas of Power Systems
· Future plans include:
Starting of the P.G. Programs and an R & D Center to remote research activities; taking up sponsored research projects and industrial consultancy services to become a Center of Excellence

(i) A modernization of Power Systems Laboratory action plan is under active consideration with the Govt. Authorities
(ii) Proposals for immediate action are:
(a) Development of appropriate algorithms for efficient management of Energy Control Centres with financial assistance from Central Power Research Institute, Bangalore
(b) Investigation on FACTS Controllers for optimal power flow in a national grid with financial assistance from Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi.

· Consulting:

Department is executing a plan to start a consultancy wing in the area of Power System Planning.

· Seminars/Workshops/Conferences organized:

The department organizes Workshops and Seminars from time to time where faculty from other institutions, practicing Engineers and Research Scientists also participate. The following activities took place in this department during this academic year.
