IIM Calcutta has been commissioned by the Railway Board of India to
conduct a 12-week (6 April to 26 June 2009) Executive General Management
Programme as a part of the regular 18 month training program for Indian
Railway Service Probationer Officers. In this connection, Indian
Railways and IIM Calcutta have signed a memorandum of understanding
(MOU) for training of Indian Railway Service Officers for the next five
years commencing this year. The General Management Programme will cover
topics in Economics, Human Resource Management, Management Information
Systems, Public Policy, Behavioural Sciences, Operations Management,
Marketing, Ethics, Finance and Accounting and Strategic Management.
The training programme also includes sessions with industry experts and visits to various industries in the Eastern Region.
The Programme was inaugurated on 6th April by Mr. Arun Vohra, Director General, Railway Staff College, Vadodara and the Director, IIM Calcutta. The Programme Directors are Professor Prashant Mishra, Professor Sahadeb Sarkar and Professor Bodhibrata Nag. Prof. Prashant Mishra is currently the Chairman of PGP Committee of IIM Calcutta, whilst Prof. Sahadeb Sarkar is the past Chairman of PGP Committee of IIM Calcutta. Senior faculty members of the Institute, Prof. Anup Sinha, Prof. Anindya Sen, Prof. Sushil Khanna, Prof. Rahul Roy, Prof. Leena Chatterjee, Prof. Debashis Saha, Prof. Biju Paul Abraham, Prof. Balram Avittathur, Prof. Ashok Banerjee, Prof. Panduranga Bhatta, Prof. Sujoya Basu, Prof. Anjan Raichaudhuri, Prof. B. B. Chakrabarti, Prof. Bhaskar Chakrabarti, Prof. Ashis Chatterjee, Prof. Ranjan Das, Prof. Partha Sarathi Dasgupta, Prof. Amit Dhiman, Prof. Biswatosh Saha, Prof. Sanjeet Singh, Prof. Abhishek Goel, Prof.Jacob Vakkayil are actively participating in the programme in teaching and guiding the participants.
The Probationer Indian Railway Service Officers after selection through the Engineering Service Examinations and the Civil Services Examinations of the Union Public Service Commission are required to undergo an 18 month training program before induction into service on various Railway Zones.
The 18 month training program includes class room training at Railway Staff College Vadodara and specialized training institutes, as well as field training on Zonal Railways, Divisions, Construction organizations and Manufacturing Units of the Indian Railways.
The Probationer Indian Railway Service Officers, inducted through the Engineering Service Examinations, have an engineering background. The Probationer Indian Railway Service Officers, inducted through the Civil Service Examinations, may have a non-engineering background too.
