- Established the first Gem Testing Laboratory in India - 1971.
- Started Gemmology course for the first time in India - 1974.
- Established the first Research and Development Laboratory (R & D Lab) in the field of Gem Stones and Gemmology in India - 1976.
- Started the first Diamond Assorting and Grading Course ( Diamond Course ) in India - 1978.
- Department of Science & Technology, Government of India Recognition as R & D Laboratory - 1979
- Started the first Correspondence Course in Gemmology in India - 1983.
- The 85th Batch of Gemmology began from 5th January 2000.
- Started Jewellery Casting course in the year - 1995.
- Started Jewellery Designing course in the year - 1995.

Description

The Gemmological Institute of India (GII ) is the first non profit research and educational organisation in the field of Gemmology in India. It is a public institution founded by the Gem and Jewellery Exporters' Association, Bombay.

It conducts F.G.A. ( London ) examinations on behalf of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain and also, conducts training classes for the same. The institute has one of the best equipped Libraries in India on Gemmology.

Students from all parts of the world are enrolled for the courses at the institute. In general the Diploma courses are at par with International standards.
