Janata College is situated half-a-k.m. south to Serfanguri, a remote, rural, tribal area in the district of Kokrajhar, BTC, Assam. The People of Serfanguri-Ramfalbill area felt the need of an institution imparting higher education as no institution as such was there in the locality within a radius of 40 k.m. For this reason many poor but talented youths were deprived of higher education. So in order to meet the need of local aspiring youths some leading personalities came forward to establish a college for the same and accordingly mobilizing public support through public meeting, the college was established as a co-educational Institution prior to getting permission from Gauhati University on 3rd of August, 1977 with P.U First Year (10+1) class and being the only Post-Graduate of this locality Shri Kamaleshwar Brahma was entrusted to shoulder the responsibility of the principal. As the college did not have Building of its own to begin with, the college was run till 1979 at the Friends' Union Club, located at Ramfal bil bazar. In 1979, the college obtained formal permission to run the Secondary Classes.
