The School of Legal Studies, established in 1962, is one of the oldest departments of the University. It was formed as a part of Kerala University, offering post graduate courses and research in law. This Law School joined the folds of University of Cochin when it was established in the year 1971.
The School has a glorious tradition. Professor (Dr.) A.T. Markose, an internationally reputed jurist, the founder director of the Indian Law Institute and Deputy Judge of International Administrative Tribunal was the prime mover of this School. Thanks to the efforts of the scholars for the last few decades, the school has blossomed into one of the prestigious institutions among University Law Departments and prominent Law Schools engaged in teaching and research in India. It offers post graduate law courses in various fields of law including traditional laws and industry friendly laws. The Law School also runs specialised electives for graduate law courses. The Institution enjoys the prime status among the top Law Schools in India.
In the last 47 years of its glorious existence, the Law School has been emphasizing on the development of the qualities of self learning, innovations, responsibility and adaptability of each student. Students in this institution are selected through a rigorous selection process based on a national level written test, group discussion and interview. Through personal attention the School seeks not only to identify and develop individual characteristics that are important to academic success, but also other qualities that promote vitality, diversity and excellence in students.
