Course programme

The School of Social Sciences comprises the following Departments and Centres.

Among these, the Departments of Economics, Political Science and Sociology have been recognised by the University Grants Commission for the Special Assistance Programme.

In addition, the School has Human Rights Programme functioning under the auspices of Political Science Department and a Centre for Indian Diaspora. The School of Social Sciences also has a interdisciplinary Women's Studies Cell which takes up research projects on gender issues. An Archival Cell with the support of the UGC is functioning under the auspices the Department of History for preservation of rare and valuable manuscripts. The Department of Anthropology has developed a museum as a teaching aid for students. All the departments are equipped with e-mail and internet facilities.

From the Academic Year 2007-2008 the School of Social Sciences is starting a Five Year Integrated Programme in Social Sciences leading to masters degree in Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology. For the first three years the students admitted to the programme will do courses offered by various departments in the School and other schools in the University. At the end of three years students will branch out to departments of Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology after fulfilling the credit requirement, stipulated by the departments.

Department of Economics

Since its inception in 1979, The Department of Economics has been committed towards promoting High Quality Teaching & Economic Research It offers programmes of M.A., MPhil & PhD. In the face of demand for competent economists outstripping the supply, UH stands among the most sought after Economics Department in the country.

Teaching & learning at the Department is defined by a diverse range of academic offerings & exposure to a multiplicity of paradigms. The course structure incorporates a balance of Theoretical Analysis & Quantitative Reasoning. Students are trained by renowned faculty which seeks to prepare well equipped economists who can tackle new emerging imperatives in economics. The Department encourages quality research programmes through collaboration with Indian & International Institutes. The faculty has also made several research based contributions in major fields of economics.

M.A.in Economics

The MA Programme has been designed to expose students to alternative paradigms of economic theory and their application to contemporary national and international problems .Training is imparted in the use of quantitative and analytical techniques. MA economics is a full-time programme spread over 2 years and is divided into 4 semesters .The programme of study consists of 10 core courses which are compulsory and 6 are elective courses. Each of these carry 100 marks and students are ordinarily required to do our courses each semester.
