Course programme

This is a face-to-face, full-time, regular programme offered from the IGNOU campus in New Delhi. The programme caters to the needs of academics, higher learning and research. It also prepares the students to join news organisations such as, newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. To facilitate holistic journalism training, the School has adopted UNESCO's model media curriculum.

The coverage areas of the programme broadly are:

* Print, electronic and online journalism
* Specialised field of news reporting
* Special emphasis on news production Print, Magazine, electronic and new media
* Media system and management
* Research methodology
* Dissertation in area of specialization, and
* Internship with a media organisation.

Specifically, the programme coverage would include concepts of news, the evolution and role of journalism in society. The programme will help students to identify news, separate fact from opinion and teach them to cover political and social issues of particular importance to the society.

The programme will assist the learners to develop communication skills to help them carry out their responsibilities as journalists and mass communicators. They will be taught how to conduct journalistic research, write, edit and produce material in various media formats.

The programme will also focus on the important aspect of media ethics and laws and best practices in journalism. An internship in the chosen field of specialization would help them understand their roles thus enabling them to get jobs in the industry.

Objectives:

After completing the MA-JMC-F2F programme, a student will be able to:

* Describe the concept of news and apply it in different forms of journalistic writings;
* Develop new story ideas and sharpen the news sense to identify the news;
* Develop new style of news writing and its presentation;
* Report, write, edit and produce news for print, radio, television and online media;
* Convert the story from one format to different media formats; and
* Ideate, visualise and differentiate the treatment of one programme format from another.

Target groups

The programme will be useful to those intending to make a full time career in main-stream media particularly news organisations. It will also be relevant to those already employed in the area and seek to upgrade their skills and knowledge or want to shift from one medium to another.

Thus the programme is aimed at the following:

* Students who want to develop skills in print and electronic media to work as reporters, script writers, presenters and producers;
* Students interested to join new media such as web journalism, multimedia and related fields.
