The Course of Mathematics of Bishop Heber College, was started as one of the earliest departments in the year 1925, when the college was known as SPG College. The Honours Course in Mathematics was offered then. The B.Sc. and M.Sc. Mathematics courses were started in 1968 and 1978 respectively. The M.Sc. Mathematics course was converted into M.Sc. Applied Mathematics (with specialization in Operations Research) in 1982. The Department was elevated into a research department in 1982 by offering the M.Phil. Course (Part-Time)
The members of the Department miss no chance of attending seminars, refresher courses, symposia and the like, to keep themselves enlightened for efficient classroom management. In the last 5 years, the members of the Department have written 5 books, published 60 research papers in national and international journals and presented many research papers in national and international conferences.
The faculty members also carry out collaborative research work with eminent professors from abroad. The Department has gained professional recognition, as three of its faculty members have refereed research papers in leading International journals. In 2004 the UGC funded Rs 1,90,000 to the Department towards 3 minor research projects. Currently, professors from ten other colleges have registered themselves with the Department for their Ph.D. degree and are in various stages of their research work.
