Course programme

The Masters programme in Political Science is a two year full-time programme done over four semesters. The course consists of twelve compulsory and four optional papers. The compulsory papers attempt to cover the core areas of the discipline, while the optional papers have been designed on the basis of the current strength and specialisation of the faculty. The course is principally done through the lecture method but it is supplemented with other methods like presentations. Optional papers are only available in the third and fourth semesters. As the number of students are smaller in these courses, seminars are also held. Here students are expected to do some amount of independent research work, usually but not always limited to secondary sources. Students would develop skills of writing, information gathering and use of library skills besides verbal presentation skills. These courses are meant to prepare students for a move to a higher research degree. The course is based on a continuous and comprehensive evaluation scheme. All papers have both an internal and external component for evaluation and assessment. The external component is an end-semester examination. The internal assessment has different requirements. These include a term paper, mid-semester test and a snap test. Students are also expected to participate actively in class discussions and other activities and are also evaluated for the same. According to university rules, a minimum of 75% attendance is required for appearing at the end-semester examination. The first and third semesters usually begin in the month of July and end in December, while the second and fourth semesters begin in December and end in April. The department does not admit students between semesters. The approved current intake capacity is 60. The current fee for the programme is Rs. 5, 500 plus exam fee.
