Course programme
The post graduate teaching and research programmes in Agriculture (Microbiology) was initially started in 1984-85 under the Centre of Agriculture. This centre was run by the University out of its own resources, financial as well as academic. Later, in the year 1993, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi has approved four post graduate courses including Agricultural Microbiology in the Institute of Agriculture and the course was restarted in 1995 with the intake of 5 students. Subsequently, the executive council, A.M.U. in its meeting held on 18/10/1997, approved the amendments to statutes 20(1) and 20(2) (c) regarding the establishment of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. The Faculty came into existence vide letter No. C-III-Stt.-1/613 dated 21.7.2000, with the four full-fledged Departments including the Department of Agricultural Microbiology.
Keeping in view the national demands, the Department of Agricultural Microbiology, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, A.M.U., is imparting teaching and training at Post-graduate and Doctoral levels on various aspects of Molecular Microbiology, Soil Microbial Ecology, Food Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology, Bioinformatics and Agricultural Biotechnology. Indeed, teaching and hand-on training in such areas have a potential for creating opportunities/job prospects for the Post Graduate/Ph.D students in the Biotechnology industry, Agriculture sectors and national/International Institutes and Universities. With the arrival of multinationals in the country, a growing demand of trained and skilled personnel?s in Microbiology/Molecular biology is envisaged. Undoubtedly, the activities based on Agricultural Microbiology and biotechnology are inconceivable without generating the man power trained in Molecular Microbiology and Molecular Biology techniques. Keeping in view of the significant demand for trained Microbiologists in this country, which is expected to increase with a faster rate in near future, as well as the great importance of basic and applied research in the area of biology peripheral to Agricultural Biotechnology, the Department of Agricultural Microbiology, Aligarh Muslim University, is striving hard to bring excellence to the existing programme.
Agriculture is confronted with many tough challenges in the developing world. Its foremost charge is ensuring food and nutritional security, which has to be achieved against the backdrop of menacingly increasing population in India. The additional food has to be produced through increasing crop productivity, in spite of yield plateauing of major crops and shrinking cultivable area. The productivity increases have to be attained through routes other than the green revolution path of the past because of ecological and environmental considerations. In fact, the country?s prosperity is inseparably linked to agricultural progress, and a key to achieving this progress is a shift from resource-dependent agriculture to a science-based agriculture. In recent years, the Agricultural Microbiology and Biotechnology has emerged as an important discipline, offering solutions to multifarious problems, presently encountered in developing sustainable agriculture and increasing crop productivity and food security and handling environmental monitoring and toxicological assessments.
