Course programme

An innovative M.Sc. course in Economics was started from August 1998 and is offered in collaboration with Anna University, Chennai, which awards the degree. The core courses of the programme – Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Indian Economic Development and Public Finance – lay the foundations for the basic theory and give students a feel for how it is being played out in real economies. The courses in Statistics, Optimization Techniques, Econometrics and Applied Econometrics equip them with a good range of skills and tools for quantitative analysis. Two-semester elective courses are offered in the following areas - Industrial Economics, Environmental Economics, Financial Economics and International Economics. In addition, depending on the demand, some of the following courses are offered as one-semester electives - Cost Benefit Analysis, Urban Economics, Energy Economics, Games and Information, Economics of Organizations, Institutional Economics. All these courses are application oriented and very relevant for today's liberalized economic environment. There is also an emphasis on independent research. Students are required to do term papers in most of the courses and each student undertakes a significant research project during the final semester. Interested students take up a summer internship programme at the end of the first year, which greatly helps them to get an orientation in applied work. Over four semesters students will take a minimum of 17 courses in addition to a dissertation paper for a total of 75 credits. Every year 30 students are admitted to this course. Out of these 7 seats are reserved for candidates from other states. .
