The Department of Entomology and Apiculture came into being as a Section
of Entomology headed by an Entomologist in the then Himachal Pradesh
Agricultural College and Research Institute, Solan in 1962. With the
formation of Himachal Pradesh University in 1970, and of Himachal Pradesh
Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur in 1978, this department became a part of
these universities. The department was headed by a Professor with
headquarter at Solan Campus and by an Associate Professor as Head at
Palampur Campus. Finally in 1985, the Solan segment of the department
became full-fledged department of Entomology and Apiculture in the Dr Y S
Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan.
At present the department is engaged in the development of management practices for insect and non-insect pests of fruits, vegetables and ornamentals. The testing of new phyto-chemicals has been taken up in multi-location trials throughout the state to keep with recent advances in pesticide formulations and product development. The efficacy of a number of bio control agents that can be utilized for pest suppression in different agro-ecosystems has also been evaluated.
