Environmental engineering offers opportunities in various aspects of environmental protection. The major areas include air pollution control, industrial hygiene, radiation, protection, hazardous waste management, toxic materials control, water supply, wastewater management, storm water management, solid waste disposal, public health and land management and within each of these major categories are many sub-specialties. The kind of work one can do as an environmental engineer is very diverse.Environmental engineering provides limitless opportunities as to type of work, for whom one work and where one work. While the job security of environmental engineers is good, the ease of breaking into the profession varies over time based on market conditions, which are affected by government policies, priorities and funding. Environmental engineers also design and operate systems to provide safe drinking water and to prevent and control pollution in water in the air and on the land. In addition, these engineers are involved with water distribution systems, wastewater treatment facilities, sewage treatment plants, disposal of garbage, cleanup of toxic waste sites, recycling and reclamation, reduction of air pollution and control of pesticides.
