Course programme

Postgraduate programme in Oceanography commenced in Cochin in 1965 at the then Department of Marine Biology and Oceanography of Kerala University. The Department of Physical Oceanography offering M.Sc. Degree in Oceanography was established in 1996 initiating teaching and research in newer fields of national relevance. The topics covered include land-ocean interaction, coastal engineering, coastal zone management, sea state analysis, environmental oceanography and GIS. The Department has been a forerunner in oceanographic studies for the past three decades. One member of the faculty was awarded the Commonwealth Fellowship to conduct advanced-level research in the U.K. The academic output since 1984 consists of 30 Ph.Ds and 115 scientific publications. The Department has been able to obtain major projects from national bodies such as DST, MHRD, AICTE, MEF and UGC. Currently, the faculty is engaged in the ARMEX project supported by DST. Sophisticated instrumental facilities available include Ocean Current Meters, Automatic Sedimentation Analyzer, (Acoustic Current Meters) Bathythermograph and Tide Tele metering Recorder, Ship Borne Wave data Logger etc.
