M.Tech in Product Design

Design Programme aspires to develop and provide innovative solutions towards the betterment of

society. The methodology adopted to achieve this aim involves encouraging creative minds to think

out-of-the-box and synthesize varied knowledge domains. In its short history, Design Programme at

IIT Kanpur has come to be known for its broad-minded philosophy and multi-disciplinary approach.

The environment encourages interactivity among students, faculty and industry. The curriculum lays

emphasis on functional as well as aesthetic aspects of design. Students are sensitized to human

factors of design - be it a consumer product or a software interface. Every design project involves

research on ergonomic aspects and understanding the users' needs and desires. Backed by

state-of-the-art infrastructure, students are given freedom and encouragement to explore virtually any

creative field of their interest.

Product Design projects at Design Programme deal with a wide spectrum of issues pertaining to

appliances, lifestyle products, packaging design and transportation design. Special emphasis is given

to understanding the user's needs and aspirations, resulting in sensitive and effective solutions.

Several of the projects taken up at Design Programme address special needs, such as products for

military, for spastics or for children of a certain age group. Students experiment with materials

ranging from foam, wood and metals to plastics and FRP. They have access to sophisticated

manufacturing facilities available at the 4i laboratory of IIT Kanpur, such as CNC Turning and Milling

Centres, Rapid Prototyping Machine and Waterjet Cutting Machine.
