Course programme

M.Tech - Thermal Engineering

The department was set up a decade ago. Now, it has graduated to offer M.Tech. & Ph.D. Programmes in emerging areas relevant to the context of industry in the present scenario. As a core branch the department grows in rhythm of the needs and demands of the global industries. In recognition of progress and excellence in teaching, research and infrastructure achieved by the department, the under graduate programmme has obtained the accreditation from National Board of Accreditation (NBA) of AICTE in 2004 and re-accredited in the year 2008. The department has started Ph. D. programs from 2005 under SOA University and admission to Ph.D programme is open to students twice a year for the Autumn and Spring semesters. Nine students have registered for the Ph. D. program till date.

Mechanical Engineering is a creative discipline that draws upon a number of basic and applied sciences to design, build, and optimize the devices, machines, processes, and systems that involve mechanical forces, work and energy. It is one of the most diverse fields of engineering influencing almost all.phpects of our life. In the light of recent modern technologies, the job description of mechanical engineers has changed substantially. Applied higher mathematics, engineering mechanics, computational techniques and design technology are still the core disciplines. Besides those, today's mechanical engineers are dealing with subjects like thermodynamics, electro-mechanical technology, manufacturing technology and management, material science and simulation. They will also face interdisciplinary problems where they will have to employ their soft skills. The program has been adapted to these new requirements.

Mechanical engineering is amongst one of the early branches of engineering started in the institute. The department was established in the year 1998 with approval of AICTE for B. Tech. program with intake strength of 40 students. Looking into the rapid growth of infrastructure in the department, the student intake has been increased to 360 in three phases. The M. Tech. program (Thermal engineering specialization) with intake strength of 18 students was introduced in 2004-05 academic session.

The undergraduate curriculum includes elective courses in the following areas:

• Advanced Engineering Mechanics
• Thermal Sciences & Engineering
• Machine dynamics and design
• Fluid mechanics
• Solid mechanics
• Heat transfer
• Manufacturing and materials processing
• Systems, measurement, and control
• Computational techniques, simulations and modeling

We aim at quality teaching so as to stimulate intellectual curiosity, creativity and innovativeness of the students. With a dedicated team consisting of highly qualified and experienced faculty members in all streams of mechanical engineering, the department aims at providing education and research of world-class level. The department is broadly divided into three academic groups: Design engineering, Production engineering and Thermal engineering. The department has an excellent placement record and many of our alumni are holding top positions in government and private sectors.

Infrastructure and Facilities

The department is well equipped with adequate facilities for teaching of fundamentals subjects as well as for carrying out research activity. The department has dedicated and able faculty who are capable of taking up any type of research and developmental work. The department has well equipped Refrigeration and Air conditioning, Heat Transfer, I. C. Engines, Automobiles, Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulic Machines, Machine dynamics, Material testing, Applied mechanics, Control & Measurement laboratories. The department has a well equipped workshop, machine shop with a staff of highly trained technical personnel providing high quality hands on experience to undergraduate students. The department has modern facilities for engineering graphics and computational analysis in the computational laboratory. The department has licensed software like Solidworks 2009, Matlab 7.1 and AutoCAD 2006 for modeling, simulation and preparation of engineering drawings. The students are updated with industry based knowledge in computer aided manufacturing in CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) laboratory. Department of Mechanical Engineering is actively involved in interaction with public and private sector industry/ Institutions such as Larsen & Toubro, IMMT (Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, formerly RRL), Wipro, TCS, Infosys, Hexaware and Mind Tree. The departmental library is procured with the latest edition titles of reputed publishers like Elsevier, Springer-Verlag, Taylor-Francis etc. which helps the students and faculty in their current research. The curriculum of the department is updated at regular intervals to cater to the needs of the students as per the advancement of technology.

The department of Mechanical Engineering is the largest department in the institute and has a workshop, a machine shop and 12 laboratories. The workshop has three sections, namely fitting shop, welding shop and foundry shop. The workshop is extensively used for imparting training to all first year students irrespective of their departments. Mechanical engineering students of second and third year also get hands-on-experience on specialized machines. Most of the laboratories cater not only to undergraduate and post graduate courses but also the research work in the form of sponsored research, industrial consultancy, post graduate dissertations and B. Tech. project work. The laboratories are being regularly updated with fast paced changes in various areas of Mechanical Engineering

The Department aims at preparing students for a broad range of technical positions throughout manufacturing enterprises that require people with strong grounding in mechanical engineering.

The Department has the following laboratories :

• Workshop
• Machine Shop
• Applied Mechanics and Vibration Laboratory
• Material Testing Laboratory
• Dynamics of Machine Laboratory
• I.C. Engines Laboratory
• CIM Laboratory
• Fluid Mechanics Laboratory
• Fluid Machinery Laboratory
• Heat Transfer, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Laboratory
• Computational Laboratory
• Automobile Laboratory
• Metrology & Measurement Laboratory
• Engineering Drawing & Graphics Laboratory
