All graduates in the faculties of arts,law,social science,oriental studies with not less than 50% marks and science and commerce with not less than 55% marks in aggregate for Part I and III.SC/ST candidates need only a pass in the qualifying examination.Candidates appearing for final year are eligible to apply. The specializations presently offered by marian college are Rural and Urban Community Development, Medical and Psychiatric Social work and Family and Child Welfare.

Marian College, from the time of its inception, has been socially committed and community oriented.The present patron Rt. Rev. Mar Mathew Arackal, Bishop of Kanjirappally, the founder executive director of PDS has a long four decades of experience in the field of Social Work. It has been the vision of His Excellency and that of the others in the governing body of Marian college that has culminated in the establishment of the Marian School of Social Work. The first course to be commenced at SSW is the Masters in Social Work (MSW) programme.
