India has 127 airports of which 11 are designated as international. Surging growth is calling for effective steps to build the necessary infrastructure feed expanding demand. Private sector likely to contribute about Rs 24,000 Core and airport authority of India would pitch in Rs.12, 000 Crore in airport modernization and expansion. The development of airport infrastructure has now gained momentum. An estimated there will be investment of Rs.40,000 Crore is expected for airport development in the country over the next five years.
Government has decided to develop the city side - parking, shopping malls, commercial complex or the non-commercial side of airports through PPP- public- private partnerships. State run airport authority of India that has also been mandated to modernize the 35 non-metro airports.
The government has also envisioned an investment of close to Rs.36000 Crore (USD 9 billion) to develop about 100 small and Greenfield airport. In the country during the 11th plan period (2007-2012), many state government i.e., Maharastra, Karnataka, Rajesthan, Gujurat, Bihar & Northeastern states have shown a keen interest on the upcoming project.
