MD IN AESTHETIC DENTISTRY
The basic concept of Under-graduate dental education shall be health oriented teaching with stress on prevention of oral diseases, instead of the traditional diseases oriented teaching. To achieve this objective, the dental students shall be exposed to health problems throughout the period of under graduate training.
Dental Curriculum:
The aim and objective of the curriculum is to produce a Dentist who is socially acceptable and is able to work sagely and effectively on patents in diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and oral diseases.
To produce a dental graduate who is capable of functioning effectively both under the rural and urban settings.
The education process shall be an evolving one and not merely a process of acquisition of a large number of disjointed facts.
There shall be less emphasis on didactic lectures and major part of the learning time shall be devoted to demonstrations, group discussions, seminars, clinical work and conferences.
Frequent internal assessment tests shall be held, so that, the process of learning would be a continuous one and not sporadic.
Careful record of work shall be maintained, which shall form the basis for internal assessment.
Every attempt shall be made to encourage the students to participate in group discussions and seminars to enable them to develop expression, character, personality and other qualities essential for a dental graduate to serve the community and the nation effectively.
Curriculum Aim and Objectives:
Aim:
The aim of a dental curriculum is to produce a caring, knowledgeable, competent and skilful dentist who is able to accept professional responsibility for the effective and sage care of patients, who appreciates the need for continuing professional development, and who is able to utilize advances in relevant knowledge.
Knowledge Objective:
The dentist will have acquired an understanding of the scientific basis of dentistry including the relevant medical sciences, the mechanisms of knowledge acquisition, scientific be aware of a wide range of problems that are presented by patients and the variety of techniques that have been developed for their recognition, investigation, prevention and treatment.
Other important areas of knowledge and understanding include:
1. disease process such as infection, inflammation, immune response, degeneration, neoplasia, metabolic, disturbance and genetic disorder which may present as disease;
2. the principles of health promotion and disease prevention, the organization and provision of health care in the community and in hospital, the relevance of business management skills and of the economic and practical constraints within which such care is delivered;
3. the ways in which both physical and mental illness occurs in patients, and the psychological responses to normal physical and social processes;
4. the broader issues of dental practice, including ethics, medico-legal considerations, and health and safety legislation affection dentistry.
