Forensic odontology is the branch of dentistry which deals with the law. It involves dentists' participation in solving crimes and assisting legal issues pertaining to the teeth.

In a pioneering endeavor, S.D.M. College of Dental Sciences & Hospital is developing an exclusive department of forensic odontology, the first of its kind facility in India. The department is expected to take shape this academic year and will be furnished with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and instruments to complement basic undergraduate teaching as well as facilitate routine forensic odontology casework and research.

As part of the forensic odontology initiative, a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum is envisaged spanning three years - beginning in the 2nd year and culminating in 4th year BDS. The topics in forensic odontology will be covered separately under dental morphology/histology, oral pathology and oral medicine/radiology. The topics covered include:

-Introduction to forensic dentistry
-Overview of forensic medicine and toxicology
-Post-mortem dental identification
-Age estimation from the teeth
-Sex differences in the teeth
-Ethnic variations in tooth morphology
-Bite mark procedures
-Jurisprudence and ethics
