ME ENGINEERING DESIGN


The department was established with an undergraduate programme in Mechanical Engineering in the year 1951. Masters Degree programmes in Engineering Design, Industrial Engineering and Computer Integrated Manufacturing were started during the years 1963, 1978 and 1991 respectively. B.E. (Mechanical) -Sandwich programme was started in the year 1983. The National Board of Accreditation has accredited various courses in the department with grade 'A' for three years in the year 1997 and again the same has been accredited with grade 'A' for three more years in the year 2001.

All the laboratories in the department are approved for carrying out research leading to Ph.D. degree (Full time and Part time) by Bharathiar University and Ph.D/M.S (by research) degree by Anna University.The department is also offering full time Ph.D. and M.E. programmes under Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) of AICTE, for the faculty members of various Engineering Colleges and engineers working in Government Organisation in the country. So far 29 scholars have completed their Ph.D degree and currently, there are 39 Ph.D. scholars pursuing their research work in the department.

The department offers consultancy in design, manufacturing processes, design and testing a range of products as per BIS specifications. Right from the start, thrust has been given to practical and industry oriented research and development. This ensured a continuous interaction with industry altogether.

The department is well-equipped with advanced laboratories like TIFAC-CORE Product Development Centre, Festo-PSG Training Centre for Pneumatic Automation, Virtual Reality Centre etc. The department maintains a close liaison with a large number of Universities, industries within and outside the country, through collaborations and research projects.
