The department of Mechanical Engineering is headed by Prof. B. C. Jain. Mechanical Engineering is a wide term which combines Aeronautical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Heat Power Engineering, Refrigeration, Cryogenic Engineering, Production Engineering, Fluid Power Engineering, Design of Machines and Mechanisms etc. The students having this degree have scope in all aforementioned fields. In order to make the potential engineering graduates aware of the general studies and basics, we have Subjects like Advanced Mathematics, Computer Programming, Mechanical Measurements, Industrial Economics and Entrepreneurship Development from engineering perspective. To provide the theoretical and practical background of machines we have subjects like Theory of Machines (two parts), Machine Design I (strength of Materials). To apply the knowledge in designing machines and mechanisms we have subjects like Machine Design in three parts.
One should not forget the importance of Manufacturing Engineering as Mechanical Engineer, and to serve the purpose, we have various subjects that deals with this aspect of essential engineering Production Technology, Manufacturing Process, Material Science & Metallurgy, and Automation In Production. Keeping in mind the futuristic job and career opportunities, one should not overlook repaid changing latest technology and for this we have the Computer Application in Mechanical Engineering, Automation, Computer Aided Design and Automatic Control.
For meeting the latest trends of conversion of energy concepts we have subjects like Engineering Thermodynamics, Fluid Power in two parts, Heat Transfer and Energy Conversion in three parts. To enhance Productivity is another critical aspect of any industrial establishment. For this we have subjects like Mechanical Measurements, Operation Research and Industrial Management.
The Department has well equipped with up-to-date Laboratories. The laboratories support the experimentation work and Research & Development activities of the department. The modernized workshop of the department supports all kinds of fabrication activities of the institute. The department has its own computer center as Computer Aided Design Laboratory. This helps the research workers in the field of Numerical Methods for Analysis, Simulation, Optimization and Finite Element Analysis.
Currently the research activity is focussed on the following fields. The staff frequently publish papers and articles in National and International events. The research work may be mainly divided in the following group :
1. Mechanism and Machine Design
2. Thermal Systems, Energy Conservation and Heat Transfer
3. Numerical Methods for Analysis and Optimization
4. Operation Research and its Optimization
5. Quality Control, Total Quality Management
6. Finite Element Analysis
