Alagappa University at Karaikudi was started in the year 1985 with
Department of Physics and along with other twelve departments and two
constituent colleges. In a short span of time, the Department of Physics
has established as Centre of Excellence in research. Since its inception,
the Department has also strong commitment towards teaching programmes at
the postgraduate level (M.Sc., and M.Phil.,) and research programmes at
doctoral level (Full time and Part time)
Thrust area research programmes on thin film semiconductor for solar cells, layered compound semiconductor for photoelectrochemical solar cells and high temperature lubricant, oxide thin film materials for smart materials and MEMS, organic conducting polymers for rechargeable batteries, semiconductor single crystal growth through melt technique, organic and organic- NLO materials are also being pursued intensively.
During this span of 20 years the Department has published more than 250 research articles, in internationally reputed scientific journals and 4 books. It has trained about 35 Ph.D Scholar, 154 M.Phil students and 238 M.Sc., students. It has organized national meetings in different areas of Physics. Several research funding agencies such as DAE, DST, UGC, CSIR, DRDO, AICTE, BRNS etc., have sponsored research projects in Department. The staffs of the Department have received invitations to visit and collaborate with many international institutions having high reputation, both inside and outside the country. Several awards and recognitions at the national and international levels have also been received by the members of the staff.
The Department has been identified as UGC-SAP and DST-FIST Department.
