The department of Anatomy came into existence concurrently with the JN Medical College on 2nd October 1962 with intake of 1st Batch of 40 MBBS students and the same strength continued up to 1984. The intake was increased from 40 to 100 students in 1985 and this remained so up to 1995. The academic session of 1996¬97 witnessed a further increase in the intake of MBBS students up to 150 as well as beginning of BDS course with intake of 40 students in the first batch by the permission of MCI and DCI respectively. The department has a good number of equipments both for teaching and research activities e.g., cadaver injector, electric saw (bone and meat cutting machine), light microscopes, microtomes, overhead and slide projectors, incubator and ovens, computers, laptop and LCD projector etc. The department has its well furnished Museum with sufficient number of different dissected parts/specimens of human body/models/charts for the better understanding of students of undergraduate and postgraduate level. The department has a number of laboratories viz. Histology research lab for undergraduate/Postgraduate students, Neuroanatomy lab, Embryology cum Teratology lab, museum preparation laboratory and dissection hall with fully equipped related instruments/equipments and furniture. The dissection hall with sitting capacity of 150 students, being an important part for the 1st professional MBBS/BDS students of Anatomy is available as per the recommendation of Medical Council of India. Also, there are three Demonstration rooms with capacity of 50 students each for anatomy tutorial classes. The department has its small library with 352 books and number of reputed journals. The department has recently established its computer laboratory for the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the department Anatomy. To store the cadavers, the department has a cold storage plant with storage space capacity of 24 dead bodies at a time.
