The Department of Chemistry was established in 1951. The department offers M.Sc. (Applied Chemistry) programme and conducts B.Sc (Applied Sciences) programme in association with the Departments of Physics and Mathematics. Ph.D. programmes are offered in various fields of chemistry. The department actively supports the engineering departments by handling applied chemistry courses in the first year of BE/BTech courses, Environmental Science and Engineering in the 6th / 7th semesters apart from courses such as corrosion engineering, fuel cells, polymer technology, etc. to various UG and PG programme.

The department is well equipped and laboratories to offer laboratory courses to all B.E, B.Tech, B.Sc (Applied Sciences), M.Sc. (Applied Chemistry) and M.Sc (Materials Science) programmes, besides guiding specific project works for final year students. The department is well equipped to offer laboratory courses for UG and PG classes.

Separate laboratories such as Bio-electrochemistry lab, Polymer science lab, Corrosion engineering lab, Environmental sciences lab have been established by the faculty for effective research.

The major research areas of interest in the department are Electrochemistry, Drug-Membrane interaction and Drugs toxicity studies, Biosensors and Chemical sensors, Electrochemical pollution control, Photopolymers, Flame retardant polymers, Photo degradation of pollutants, Metal-organic complexes, nanomaterials, sol� gel techniques, ceramics etc.
