P.hd in Lexicography:Bhasha shastra paribhashika nighantuvu

The School of Language Development started its activities since the inception of the University in December 1985. This school was established with the main objective of developing Telugu language to fulfill the requirements of the Telugu speaking people. The school has been actively engaged in research in various applied areas of Linguistics. The School is functioning with two departments i.e. Department of Linguistics and the Department of Lexicography.
This department aims at developing Telugu as a language of modern knowledge and medium of instruction. And providing for research and determine the procedures about development of Telugu language in all the educational fields existing in the developing world and evolving suitable approaches. This department offers post graduate and research courses that are designed for the development of language.
It is the only Department of its kind in the State. This Department focuses on compilation and publication of Telugu words, expressions, colloquial terms, mutual borrowings, words peculiar to industry and other occupations which are used by Telugu speaking people in the state of Andhra Pradesh and also in other countries where Telugu speaking people live
Each and every subject has technical terminologies. If one wants to understand the subject clearly, he/she should understand the terminologies of the subject first. In the same way Linguistics has also many technical terminologies. The Europeans who are standing first in research and knowledge in Linguistics, prepared many Linguistic terminological dictionaries. In spite of our rich literary traditions, we do not have a terminological dictionary for Linguistics especially in Telugu.
To full fill the lacuna, the Department of Lexicography undertook a project named ‘Bhasha shastra paribhashika nighantuvu'. David Crystal's ‘Dictionary of Phonetics and Linguistics' is being used as base for preparing this dictionary. This will certainly help the teacher as well as students who are going to teach and study Linguistics in Telugu medium as well as the other Telugu mother tongue people who are interested in Linguistics. With in a year or two this will be published by the department of Lexicography
