P.hd in Smart Release Systems
Smart release systems based on degradable and stimuli responsive materials promise to overcome the disadvantages of the current drug formulations. These nano delivery systems can be designed to release the drug over an extended period (sustained release) or specifically target a particular cell (targeted release) or release the drug only under specified conditions (triggered release). These strategies will markedly improve chemotherapy by reducing side-effects, frequency of doses and dosage.
The Centre is currently developing polymeric nanospheres for sustained and targeted release of anti-cancer drugs apart from liposomal delivery systems for si-RNA, plasmid and anti-retroviral delivery. Novel dendrimeric delivery systems are under development for targeted delivery of anti-cancer drugs. Contact lens based delivery systems are also being investigated for sustained release of ocular drugs.
