Linguistics and Language Development is a broad-based discipline concerned with human language, the study of which can be divided into two main areas. On the one hand, linguistics deals with the underlying structures of language, e.g. syntax (the structure of sentences), morphology (the structure of words), semantics (meaning) and phonology (sound structure). On the other hand, linguistics is also concerned with wider issues relating to language use, including the study of language change, the role of language in society (socio linguistics), the way in which language is acquired by children and/or represented in the brain (psycholinguistics), the nature and structure of texts and conversation (discourse analysis), and the problems of teaching and learning foreign languages.
