Soil scientists are interested in the formation of soils, their role in the environment, and how they affect plant growth. Soil scientists study pedology (soil formation and evolution), mineralogy (the rocks from which soils are formed), physics (water and solute transport within soils), chemistry, plant nutrition and microbiology.
Soil scientists are employed in many areas, such as environmental science, land management, agriculture, and resource and with chemical companies. Soil scientists are also trained to work in ecosystem conservation and rehabilitation. Having performed a research project will also demonstrates to employers that you have skills in this area, as well as in scientific communication.
